Gas storage capacity hits 3.16 bcm
Iran’s underground natural gas storage capacity increased to 3.16 billion cubic meters under the 14th administration, strengthening the country’s ability to stabilize the gas network and manage demand during peak consumption periods.
The rise in natural gas consumption in recent years and the need to address energy imbalances have underscored the importance of expanding gas industry infrastructure. Underground gas storage is a key tool for balancing supply and demand and improving network reliability.

Storage allows part of the gas produced during periods of lower demand to be injected into underground reservoirs and held for use when consumption rises. This provides a backup source during peak periods and gives the gas network greater operational flexibility.

The increase in the country’s underground storage capacity to 3.16 billion cubic meters under the 14th administration is part of a broader strategy focused on developing sustainable infrastructure alongside higher production and an expanded transmission network.

Sarajeh and Shourijeh Drive Strategic Expansion

The Sarajeh and Shourijeh reservoirs are the main pillars of Iran’s underground gas storage system, with efforts in recent years focused on expanding their capacity.

Development projects at the two reservoirs have increased not only storage potential but also gas injection and withdrawal capacity. This is important because having sufficient volumes of stored gas alone is not enough; the network must also be capable of quickly withdrawing and delivering the gas when demand increases.

The development of these reservoirs is part of an interconnected chain that begins with gas production and continues through transmission and storage. Expanding capacity across this chain provides greater flexibility in managing gas supplies under varying demand conditions.

A Backup for Peak Demand

Natural gas consumption rises sharply during the colder months, making access to backup supplies particularly important. Stored gas can be brought into the network when demand increases, helping meet part of the additional requirement.

This capacity is particularly important for residential and commercial consumers and can support network stability alongside other demand-management measures. At the same time, reliable gas supplies for power plants and industries depend on effective network operations and the ability to manage available resources during peak periods.

For this reason, expanding storage should not be viewed simply as an increase in the gas industry’s infrastructure capacity. It represents part of the country’s operational ability to respond to fluctuations in demand and manage critical conditions across the network.

Completing the Gas Supply Chain

Experience in recent years has shown that increasing production alone is not enough to meet growing energy demand. The transmission of produced gas and the development of adequate storage capacity must advance alongside field development and higher output.

From this perspective, the increase in underground gas storage capacity under the 14th administration, together with the expansion of transmission pipelines and other gas infrastructure, forms part of efforts to strengthen the national gas network.

These measures will enhance the country’s ability to better manage supply and demand while providing a more reliable buffer for gas supplies.

Strengthening Network Resilience

Expanding gas storage ultimately improves the resilience of the country’s energy network. As storage and withdrawal capacity increase, the network gains more tools to manage fluctuations in consumption and respond to abnormal conditions.
